What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? (Is It Painful? What are common sensations?)
If you’ve been searching “what does acupuncture feel like?” or wondering “is acupuncture painful?”; you are not alone. At Healing Feeling Acupuncture & Wellness in Fremont Seattle, WA, this is one of the most common questions I hear from my first-time patients.
The truth is, acupuncture is typically very gentle, relaxing, and often surprisingly comfortable. I can’t tell you how many patients I have saying, “I can’t believe I can feel this relaxed with needles all over my body”. I wanted to write this blog about understanding what sensations can come up during a treatment to help you feel more confident and at ease when getting acupuncture!
Is Acupuncture Painful?
Acupuncture is not like getting a shot or injection. The needles used are extremely thin (see my other blog post on how small the needles are!). Needles are about the width of a human hair- so most people feel little to no pain upon insertion. You may notice a tiny pinch or quick sensation when the needle is inserted through the skin, but that sensation usually fades within seconds. Many patients are surprised by how subtle the experience is.
What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? (Common Sensations)
During an acupuncture treatment, every body responds in different ways, at different times. Different sensations are completely normal and often a sign that your nervous system and circulation are being activated. I usually start my treatments saying that you will feel a little pinch into the skin, then if you feel sharp and stays sharp- let me know because I don’t want that, if you feel nothing, totally okay, if you feel an achey sensation, I absolutely love that.
Common sensations my patients tell me frequently:
Dull achey/heavy feeling: A mild, dull ache or heavy feeling around the needle is one of the most common sensations. This is often referred to as “De Qi” in Chinese medicine and is considered a positive therapeutic response.
Tingling or Gentle Spreading Sensation: You may feel tingling, warmth, or a sensation that travels slightly away from the needle. This is a sign of increased blood flow and nerve stimulation.
Warmth or Cooling: Some patients notice warmth spreading through an area, while others feel a subtle cooling sensation. Both are normal and reflect shifts in circulation and energy flow.
Pressure or Fullness: A feeling of fullness or pressure can occur at the needle site. This is not painful—just unfamiliar—and usually fades quickly.
Electric: There are some points that I want to elicit an electric feeling (ex. if I am trying to stimulate a nerve that has been perhaps shut off for a long time, and needs to start working again). I always tell my patients what I expect them to feel from points, especially if I am trying to elicit sensations like electricity.
Muscle Twitching: Small muscle twitches may happen when a needle activates a tight or stagnant area. This is completely normal and often helps release tension. Muscle twitches or fasciculations can also be ideal when doing trigger point dry needling/orthopedic style acupuncture where the goal is to bring blood flow into that tight muscle area.
Deep Relaxation or “Floating” Feeling Many people enter a deeply relaxed state during acupuncture. It’s common to feel calm, heavy, or even fall asleep during your session. I have had patients tell me that their “aura rings told me I took a nap here” but often it is a pseudo nap where your body is deeply relaxed but your mind is still aware of it’s surroundings.
Emotional Release Because acupuncture supports the nervous system, some patients experience emotional release. You may feel lighter, calmer, or even tearful afterward; this is a healthy and natural response.
Other sensations: I have had patient say “I see different colors” or detail somewhat psychedelic/euphoric experiences during their treatment. Every body is different, every experience is different, but I work with each person to guide them through sensations.
What’s NOT Normal During Acupuncture?
Acupuncture should never feel intensely painful. While mild sensations are expected, you should not experience:
Sharp or stabbing pain
Burning that doesn’t subside
Ongoing discomfort
If anything feels uncomfortable, your acupuncturist can easily adjust the needle to ensure your session stays relaxing. The goal of the session is to relax your nervous system so that your body can get into healing mode, if you are constantly thinking a needle that continues to feel sharp, that is not ideal, and should be fixed before the practitioner leaves the room! I always ask my patients before I leave the room if everything feels okay and remind them that if they need me they just have to say my name, I can hear them right next door.
What Do You Feel After Acupuncture?
After your session, you may notice:
A deep sense of calm or relaxation
Reduced pain and muscle tension
Improved energy or mental clarity
Better sleep that night
Mild soreness (similar to a workout or massage)
These are all signs your body is responding and rebalancing.
Why Do These Sensations Happen?
Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system, improving circulation, and activating the body’s natural healing response. These sensations are your body shifting out of “fight or flight” mode and into a more restorative, balanced state.
Even if you feel very little during treatment, acupuncture is still working. Subtle responses can be just as effective as noticeable ones.
