Acupuncture for PCOS: A Natural Approach to Hormonal Balance & Fertility Support in Seattle
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a chronic endocrine disorder that affects how a woman’s ovaries function. It is one of the most common hormonal imbalances in women of reproductive age, with symptoms often emerging during puberty or early adulthood and affects millions of women often leading to irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, weight gain, and infertility
PCOS is characterized by three primary diagnostic criteria (known as the Rotterdam Criteria):
Irregular or absent ovulation (oligo-ovulation or anovulation)
Hyperandrogenism (excess male hormones, often seen as acne, hirsutism, or scalp hair thinning)
Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound (enlarged ovaries with multiple immature follicles)
A woman must meet at least two of the three criteria to be diagnosed with PCOS. The exact cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetics, insulin resistance, and low-grade inflammation.
PCOS and Insulin Resistance
One of the most significant underlying features of PCOS is insulin resistance, where the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin. This forces the pancreas to produce more insulin, which in turn stimulates the ovaries to produce more androgens (male hormones). Elevated insulin and androgen levels disrupt normal ovulation and can lead to:
Irregular menstrual cycles
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Acne and oily skin
Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
Hair thinning on the scalp
Fertility struggles
Other Health Risks Associated with PCOS
Women with PCOS are also at higher risk for long-term health issues, including:
Type 2 diabetes
High cholesterol and cardiovascular disease
Sleep apnea
Endometrial cancer (due to prolonged unopposed estrogen exposure)
Depression and anxiety
Despite its name, not all women with PCOS have visible cysts on the ovaries—and not all women with cysts have PCOS. That's why diagnosis requires a full clinical and hormonal assessment.
